Improving Essential Reading & Study Skills contains one of the best approaches to Study Skills and Reading Improvement on the market today. Because of AB 705 in CA, and similar legislation in other states, classes that previously helped students to develop the skills necessary to be successful in transfer level courses are no longer available. Professor Scheg has included his audio (or video) teaching of each chapter similar to what you would receive in an online class without the need to attend classes or pay additional fees. Proceed at your own pace and take the chapter tests as often as necessary.

Chapter 1: The PROCTRM Study Technique. Since developed by the author, in 1995, it has been used in colleges, universities, and high schools with remarkable success. It is a proven method to help students achieve higher grades and more success in school and in life. Most students (even at the university level) have never been formally taught how to study and create good notes. These chapters solve that problem.

Chapters 2-4: These chapters help students to uncover the basic structure underlying the English language as it is presented in print. It also helps students to refine their knowledge of highlighting and note creation as described in chapter 1.

Chapters 5-6: Students are able to discover the patterns used in text, and how to take advantage of that knowledge when decoding information.

Chapters 7-9: Discovering why an author wrote a given piece, separating facts from opinions, and looking for deeper meaning in the readings comprises these chapters.

Chapters 10-11: The last two chapters take students beyond simple readings to uncover techniques used in Argumentation/Debate and techniques used sometimes to try to deceive readers.

Part 2: Includes high interest reading that encourage students to apply the skills learned in Part 1 of the text.

The Appendix: Contains additional information useful in integrating reading skills with the use of the Internet.

In addition to what was mentioned in the introduction, there is a PowerPoint reader, Adobe Reader, writing templates, note templates, and PowerPoint teaching lessons. About the Author:

Lawrence Scheg is a Reading Specialist currently teaching at Modesto Junior College. His Career started in 1973 as reading instructor for Walter Panas High School in Shrub Oak, New York. He was a pioneer in creating District, State, and Federally funded reading labs for that high school.

In 1995, Professor Scheg began a career in teaching reading at the community college level at Santa Barbara City College. He also taught at Allan Hancock College and Antelope Valley College before coming to MJC in the fall of 2000.

In addition to his community college instruction, Professor Scheg has taught for Chapman University in their Graduate level program. There he instructed aspiring teachers in how to implement the teaching of reading and study skills into virtually any curriculum – and at nearly any grade level.
