About the Text:
A flash drive, that contains the information previously used in the classroom and for online teaching is included with this purchase.
Building Necessary Reading & Study Skills contains one of the best approaches to Study Skills and Reading Improvement on the market today. A perfect choice for homeschooling, building job skills, and gaining the knowledge that is no longer available to those who need it. Because of AB 705 in CA, and similar legislation in other states, classes that previously helped students to develop the skills necessary to be successful in transfer level courses are no longer available. This book, and the accompanying flash drive, will help students gain those skills. Professor Scheg has included his audio (or video) teaching of each chapter similar to what you would receive in an online class without the need to attend classes or pay additional fees. Proceed at your own pace and take the chapter tests as often as necessary.
Chapter 1: The PROCTRM Study Technique. Since developed by the author, in 1995, it has been used in colleges, universities, and high schools with remarkable success. It is a proven method to help students achieve higher grades and more success in school and in life. Most students (even at the university level) have never been formally taught how to study and create good notes. These chapters solve that problem.
Chapter 2: PROCTRM STUDY SKILLS APPLIED TO READINGS OTHER THAN THE TEXT BOOK
This chapter applies the PROCTRM study skills method to readings beyond the textbook.
Chapters 3 & 4: Point & Support/ Main Ideas, Supporting Details, and Implied Main Ideas These chapters cover the basics of the thought processes that start a person on the path to developing thinking skills associated with reading. These chapters also help the student to more fully understand the PROCTRM study technique.
Chapter 5: Transitions and Patterns of Organization Students can discover the patterns used in text and how to take advantage of that knowledge when decoding information.
Chapter 6: The Reading/Writing Connection Explores the reading/writing connection and provides a very useful three step process that clearly shows how the majority of writers organize their work.
Chapter 7: What Creates a Good Reader? Discusses what it is that makes a good reader and what skills are necessary to obtain that goal.
Chapter 8: Vocabulary in Context Teaches the importance of vocabulary development to the entire reading process.
Chapter 9: Word Parts: Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes Teaches the importance of learning parts of words and how their meanings can unlock many more words.
Chapter 10: Purpose & Tone Discover why a person writes and how their tone can reveal their attitude toward their subject matter or audience.
Chapter 11: Facts vs. Opinions: Separating facts from opinions, and looking for deeper meaning in the readings comprises this chapter.
Chapter 12: The Newspaper & Other Media: Provides a comprehensive, and unbiased, look at newspapers, media and the newspaper and media industry. It clearly discusses the importance of newspapers, the internet, and other media in our daily lives.
Part 2: Includes high interest readings that encourage students to apply the skills learned in Part 1 of the text through a series of thought provoking questions.
In addition to what was mentioned in the introduction, the flash drive contains a PowerPoint reader, an Adobe Reader, writing templates, note templates, and PowerPoint teaching lessons. The flash drive contains much more than we can write about here, so it is recommended that the student and teacher explore it together.
